It’s perhaps no surprise that this 9-piece funk-soul powerhouse have been getting feet moving and hips shaking at festivals up and down the UK. And their latest single ‘Friday’ is a positively uplifting anthem made for a Friday night out on the town.
When I see a 9-piece funk band shaking up the live circuit, I just know they’re gonna be bringing an array of noise as if wide-ranging instrumentation is going out of fashion – and perhaps it is, but Soul Grenades are bringing it back with their latest vibrant single Friday, released in February.
(Some of) the Soul Grenades
As much as the big spectrum of instruments means there’s definitely a lot going on, this single comes with a very simple message…it’s Friday and it’s time to have a drink and pull some shapes. For this reason, it’s an upbeat party banger that I’m sure most people could get behind.
Frantic jazzy drums are peppered throughout the track that bring a funky bounce as their lead singer sings of parties had, clubs frequented and drinks consumed – while all the other funk-soul trimmings are there to be appreciated…groovy bass, funky guitars, busy organs and of course booming trumpets to name a few!
“Put our best gladrags on, spray our hair, and put on our lucky underwear!” ends the first verse before a powerful bridge and catchy chorus that praises Friday night like it’s Sunday mass.
Friday brings that lively 70s funk sound that’s hard to resist, from a big band that’s full of life and every instrument you can think of (even a djembe). It’s no surprise then that Soul Grenades are making a name for themselves as one of the most vivacious and entertaining live bands on the festival circuit.
Only people without a soul could resist dancing once the Soul Grenades are thrown into the room! An easy listen for anyone getting ready to paint the town red.
