Blossoming producer AM.I squeezes one last EP of up-front techno in before the year’s end – The Change out on HAUTBOXx Records – adding yet more masterful creators and techno pounders to this flourishing imprint. Reaching the Beatport top 100 in the first week, this drawn out EP is worth a listen even beyond techno bubbles.
Not a complete techno head? Perhaps looking for something to get your heart rate up at the gym? Are you an emerging producer looking for inspiration? Well, AM.I’s The Change EP that just dropped on HAUTBOXx Records has got those areas covered!
The first song off this four track EP Echo In My Mind starts with (you guessed it) an Earth-shattering kick drum layered with a whole lot of bass. The track builds up with a snappy high end melody that does leave somewhat of an echo in my mind…I can’t help but think I’ve heard it before in other techno tunes. That said, it’s an enthralling track that has me engaged throughout.
AM.I titled the next track as something we need a lot more of in the world today (perhaps her intention), it’s called Empath and it’s certainly an anthem! Spooky synths accompany a pounding beat, and after the first minute or so the notes from the top end melody in Echo In My Mind almost seem to make a reappearance, albeit with a slightly different arrangement and effects around them (I’m not complaining as it’s a banger of a lead). With this being a 7 minute track there’s lots of time for this more-ish melody to repeat, develop and get etched in your mind some more, and my Beats headphones have got their work cut out pumping the kick-bass in the second half of this marathon song.
Third song Focus is fairly straightforward with a lot of room, infused with a dark edge. And the last track Luminate has a lot going on, starting with underwatery low-ends that build with a bulldozer of rhythmic layers, alongside squelchy compressed bass leading into soft euphoric crystal chiming pads. During the breakdown halfway through, it’s not easy to predict what will come next, until a lonesome kick booms and the synth patterns build up again.
With the last two tracks also being almost 7 minutes each, you are certainly getting your money’s worth with this lengthy EP – perhaps making the fact it’s hit the Beatport top 100 chart less of a surprise – A LOT of well produced techno is packed into this. DJs who buy and spin these tracks are allowing themselves a lot of transfer digging time that’s for sure.
With lots of power and a little more to offer beyond just a hard techno thumpfest; this deep, dynamic and far-reaching EP is a suitable pick for a wide range of scenes, scenarios and shindigs. Whack it on below and let us know what you think in the comments!
