Electronic composer and producer Ben Böhmer teams up with Angelo and Christian – aka JONAH – to produce a soft and subtle melancholic anthem. ‘Best Life’ is a textbook Böhmer deep trancey serenade, but perhaps better suited to large stadium gigs rather than sweaty techno basements.
Ben Böhmer makes the kind of deep emotive trance that always seems to put me in a pensive sad reflection, while instilling optimistic euphoria, and Best Life featuring JONAH is no different.
The general quality of this single is a stark reminder of Böhmer’s abilities as a professional composer, in addition to electronic music producer. While his songs usually include quite long build ups and progressive elements, this single gets straight into it almost immediately – hence the reason I think this is more a radio hit or large festival interlude compared to some of his more underground, club-appropriate tracks. There is certainly more of a poppy vibe to this than some of his previous work.
But even while being less riskè than his usual stuff, it’s still tasteful and doesn’t succumb to loud tacky attention grabbing horns, repetitive samples, or overused synths like much arena suited EDM coming out nowadays.
What Ben offers with Best Life is EDM with class, electronica with depth, and a quality of production that really is second to none. Its instrumental components are elegantly arranged, with JONAH bringing more than complimentary vocals swaying with the beat and non-vocal melodies.
As the name might suggest living your best life, it’s not clear if this is in reference to a previous relationship or present hedonism. Either way it’s a perfect soundtrack for heartbreak, nostalgic memories, or an emotional turning point. Whatever emotive moment this track conjures up in you, make sure it’s on a good soundsystem.
