Single Review: R U Dumb by Donae’o

For people who like…grime, rap, UKG

With collabs ranging from Giggs to JME and releases from garage and grime to afrobeats, versatile artist Donae’o shows us why he’s such a prominent and esteemed voice in UK bass and rap music…with his freshest banger ‘R U Dumb’ just too catchy and clever to ignore.

If you’re a fan of UK garage, grime, funky, or Afrobeats you’ll likely have heard of Donae’o. But with his music covering such a scope of different genres, it’s easy to forget his primary talent which has led to his many accolades in the rap world. Well, now you’ve got your reminder…new single R U Dumb.

The track starts off with a fairly typical UK bass synth rattling away, coupled with nice loud snare smacks and Donae’o aggressively yelling the track’s title “R U Dumb”. Then he comes in with his first bar, a potent display that Donae’o knows his way around a rap verse or two.

Chat shit get thumpy

One man one punch one forehead lumpy

Trust me it’s a done deed

I’m a grumpy croc like crocodile dundee

It was teaser reels of these bars on Donaeo’s IG that preemptively caught my attention, and gave me good reason to check out the single as soon as it dropped on Friday 10th May.

A sophisticated rhyme pattern, funny lyrics, and clear-as-day delivery really hooked me in and got me closely following the song word for word until the end. By the last verse he’s already provided three synonymous and yet very different ways to cleverly describe punching someone who might be acting up.

Chat shit…SHUT UP

One man one punch one forehead bruck up!

It’s not all boisterous bars and fight talk though, with much of his lyrics in this single matching the versatile and varied nature of his discography. With such skill and aptitude jam packed into this fairly short song, this is two and a half minutes well spent, and a very good general introduction showcasing his broad talent to anyone that might not be familiar with it.
