Who says drummers can’t be esteemed songwriters? MzDrummer’s jazz infused second single ‘Puzzle Pieces’…a prime example of quality instrumental songwriting

Single Review: Puzzle Pieces by MzDrummer

For people who like…jazz, funk, jazz fusion

Drum diva Monica – aka MzDrummer – dropped her second single Puzzle Pieces back in 2020. But with her having just played The Royal Albert Hall in Spring 2024, this talented songwriter’s last release deserves much more attention on digital platforms.

With no time to waste, Puzzle Pieces gets off to a vibrant start with a micro drum roll, funky synth organs, and a smooth saxophone bursting in right from the beginning; creating something reminiscent of a Herbie Hancock 80s jazz fusion anthem right from the get go. As we get to the bridge, it slows down with a cool sax solo and MzDrummer’s intricate drum fills and overall bouncy beat.

Although it may not follow contemporary music trends, this single is an awesome groovy tribute to 70s and 80s jazz fusion, and quite clearly an absolute banger of a performance on the drums.

She does not stop until the piece reaches its conclusion, filling every single second with off-beat hi-hats, an extra springy kick drum, and absolutely relentless snare, tom and ride fills to match any jazz funk hit from the golden era. The onslaught of fills reach their climax at the end, which I can only describe as an orgasm of rhythm.

MzDrummer

It’s clear as day that MzDrummer holds acute drumming talent, as well as a gift for instrumental songwriting. For this reason Puzzle Pieces deserves to be overtly run up on all the streaming platforms – especially Spotify and Apple Music – so go and show it some love!
