The Margaret Hooligans prove they’re more than just garage rock with vibrant and quirky new single ‘The Stonehengers’

Single Review: The Stonehengers by The Margaret Hooligans

For people who like…garage rock, psychedelic rock, indie.

Kooky garage rockers The Margaret Hooligans have been very busy since their debut back in 2020. The StoneHengers is a vibrant and catchy addition to their already flourishing collection of 6 singles this year. Are they the new Zeppelin, Grateful Dead, and The Who rolled into one?

The beginning of The Stonehengers sounding a bit like Ramble On by Led Zeppelin is certainly not a bad thing in my book. With Mr. Strontium thrashing away on the drums with pretty much the same level of talent as the great and late John Bonham.

This single certainly has a strong DIY garage rock feel to it, alongside the type of quirkiness only found with psychedelic rock legends such as The Grateful Dead, or even Frank Zappa. And judging by the cover art, The Margaret Hooligans are certainly partial to a bit of psychedelia.

Mr. Strontium’s high energy tempo and off-key intricate drum fills really are quite brilliant. And let’s not forget Meg Cratty’s electric ukulele and gifted vocals that really bring the song together to make for a very catchy chorus, almost making me put on a tie-dye headband and start swirling my arms around like I’m at a 1960s Rainbow Gathering.

They have really managed to strike an excellent balance between off-key garage rock quirk, and a clear and catchy melody that pushes for a singalong. And while some moments of the song might sound scrappy, don’t let that trick you into thinking they’re amateurs that don’t know what they’re doing. They know exactly what they’re doing…and it’s wonderful.

Anyone who is a fan of garage rock ‘n’ roll with a humorous psychedelic twist make sure you listen to The Stonehengers below, and check out The Hooligans’ other singles too, as there’s plenty more where that came from!
