Dance away those January Blues to Wuzy Bambussy’s rhythmic swinger featuring the awesome Kat Harrison

Single Review: January Blue by Wuzy Bambussy

For people who like…ska, indie, folk (waltz).

UK songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist Wuzy Bambussy has been sitting on this first collaboration with vocalist Kat Harrison for some time, waiting for the appropriate release date for this quirky New Year waltzer. That date has finally come, with January Blue released just in time for us to sashay away those dry January sorrows.

'January Blue' Cover

Wuzy has just released a new year single, appropriately titled January Blue, which speaks words of existential dread and decaying love to an offbeat 3/4 time signature and some genuinely awesome vocal contributions by the wonderful Kat Harrison.

Right from the outset this track starts with a strong rhythmic piano and jazzy hi-hats that give off a fairground waltzer vibe. Extra layers come in for the choruses, including violins and even organs – Wuzy himself tells us that those uplifting choruses (certainly aided by Kat’s awesome singing) were intended to offset the existentially uneasy theme running through the track.

Blue (blue blue)

So January blue

Take me back to when

Everything was meant

Take my hand and then

Dance with me again

Like you did on New Years Eve

To uphold the quirky and somewhat sinister vibe through the recording process, Wuzy even placed a microphone up the chimney stack of his studio to record the chattering of some jackdaws perched at the top – for those that don’t know a jackdaw is a type of black feathered bird similar to a crow.

And here we have it, an interesting new year anthem with sophisticated instrumentation, great vocals, and (dare I say it) a suitably gloomy theme interspersed with an uplifting merry-go-round ambiance. The perfect song to whack on if you want to twirl away those January blues with a gifted musical collaboration.
