Single Review: Zephyr & Sycophant
For people who like…psychedelic rock, indie, disco

Anyone for old skool psychedelic rock backed by a rigid electronic drum beat and very danceable funky bass? Latest single from Arson Whales is bringing just that. With psychedelic vibes and an overall catchy sound, we recommend this cool four-piece masterpiece to rainbow gatherers and pop fans alike!

'GALACTOPUS' Cover

If you like the sounds of the psychedelic golden-era infused with 70s funk/disco, and you haven’t heard Arson Whales yet, now is probably a good time to get acquainted. Arson Whales are psych rockers from Sacramento CA, with some of the coolest tie-dye style cover art you’ve seen this side of the summer of love. They’ve now released their latest single Zephyr And Sycophant as part of their full album GALACTOPUS released earlier this year.

Judging by previous tracks they’re certainly not afraid to crack out the funky basslines like it’s 1977, and this latest release is no different. Upon pressing play you’ll be hit by a solid beat and chic bass line that will get you tapping your feet pondering the possibility of breaking into an upbeat dance – with Linda’s exceptional vocals promptly chiming in to give you absolutely no reason to hold back.

Arson Playing Live

Zephyr And Sycophant is beautifully written, put together, and produced – with all the dancey disco elements coming together so well with guitar strumming that’s certainly  heavy on the delay pedal. With quite straightforward instrumentation alongside very memorable vocal melodies, the somewhat ambiguous lyrics and subject matter are well left to the imagination.

Don’t you think there’s a plan

For the man with the gold tooth

Hiding in a tollbooth

Unlike GALACTOPUS’s cover art, this song carries an air of simplicity that makes it easy to enjoy whether you’re a staunch experimental psychonaut, or just someone who appreciates uncomplicated disco sounds. It’s quite refreshing to see such a quirky band just make an all round great piece of music that anyone can enjoy.
